چکیده

Several kinds of models have been developed in modeling the occurrence of crashes, but most of these models have deficiencies and lack good results. Single and multivariate deterministic models have illustrated some influences of causal factors on crashes, but the inherent deterministic characteristic of these models makes explaining crash events a difficult task for these kinds of models. Stochastic regression models, such as Poisson, Negative Binomial, and Zero Inflated Poisson (ZIP) have been explored to account for the discrete and stochastic characteristics of crashes. However, no consistent results have been illustrated yet. The possible reasons for the deficiencies of existing models could be attributed to the modeling methodologies or the data set used. We have opportunities to obtain corresponding traffic data related to the time when crashes take place from the Smart Travel Lab at University of Virginia. Those data include volume, speed, and occupancy. Based on the review of the existing models, data obtained from the Smart Travel Lab were used in the application of several stochastic regression models including Poisson, negative binomial, zero inflated Poisson, and zero inflated negative binomial regression models. The selected variables include crash counts, volume, speed, occupancy, curvature, exposure, and standard deviation of speed. Negative binomial and ZIP were shown to be preferred modeling methods for this study. Significant positive relationships were also identified between the occurrence of crashes and volume, standard deviation of speed, and exposure. These relationships could be applied to provide powerful support to the decision making of incident management in Intelligent Transportation Systems.

On Calibration and Application of Logit-Based Stochastic Traffic Assignment Models

There is a growing recognition that discrete choice models are capable of providing a more realistic picture of route choice behavior. In particular, influential factors other than travel time that are found to affect the choice of route trigger the application of random utility models in the route choice literature. This paper focuses on path-based, logit-type stochastic route choice models, i...

Zero Inflated Negative Binomial for Modeling Heavy Vehicle Crash Rate on Indian Rural Highway

Poisson regression and negative binomial regression have been widely used to model the road crashes and to predict crash frequency. Zero inflated models have been shown to be a powerful tool to predict crash frequency when crash data are characterized by preponderance of zero. This paper presents the research work aiming to correlate the road traffic crash rate with road geometry and traffic ch...

Multi-level Bayesian analyses for single- and multi-vehicle freeway crashes.

This study presents multi-level analyses for single- and multi-vehicle crashes on a mountainous freeway. Data from a 15-mile mountainous freeway section on I-70 were investigated. Both aggregate and disaggregate models for the two crash conditions were developed. Five years of crash data were used in the aggregate investigation, while the disaggregate models utilized one year of crash data alon...

A novel approach for analyzing severe crash patterns on multilane highways.

This study presents a novel approach for analysis of patterns in severe crashes that occur on mid-block segments of multilane highways with partially limited access. A within stratum matched crash vs. non-crash classification approach is adopted towards that end. Under this approach crashes serve as units of analysis and it does not require aggregation of crash data over arterial segments of ar...

A method for relating type of crash to traffic flow characteristics on urban freeways

A method is developed to determine how crash characteristics are related to traffic flow conditions at the time of occurrence. Crashes are described in terms of the type and location of the collision, the number of vehicles involved, movements of these vehicles prior to collision, and severity. Traffic flow is characterized by central tendencies and variations of traffic flow and flow/occupancy...
